The Cold War Begins

  • Started as tensions between the two.
  • Americans were anti-communist; WHY?-The Bolshevik Revolution; Russia had left WWI because of this; America didn't like them for leaving the Allied and communism itself.
  • The Bolshevik slogan was "Peace, Land, and Bread".
  • The Soviet Union were upset that the other countries did not help them (US, F, GB)
  • The future of Poland's government.
  • US: Capitalism and democracy. USSR: Communism and dictatorship.
Capitalism: Economy system, where the people are left alone by the government, they accomplish/fail by themselves. America uses: Welfare Capitalism, where the government gives assistance to failing/troubled businesses. Free market, no boundaries (pure c.). The America government does three things: Tax, Regulation, Rules.
Democracy: Government system, where it is made by the people and for the people; equality in everyone; everyone has same amount of power. America's type: Representative Democracy, bounded by the Constitution; the president has the power to execute laws by Congress after being checked by the Supreme Court. This type of democracy has a more filtered system, because it would be impossible with such a large society.
Dictatorship: Goverment system, where all the power is ruled by one person, usually with an iron fist and calls all the shots. Stalin's type: Totalitarianism (only one person/class/group rules). Stalin wanted Russia to be more industrilized, he planned famines on purpose, he established the Iron Curtain; he ruled with an iron fist.
Communism: Economy system, where the government has the power to intervene at any time, taking property, helping businesses, etc. (Businesses are affected by government). USSR uses: Stalinism (At the time), an interpretation of Marx's and Lenin's ideas.

  • Marshall Plan-US aid to European nations (not allied with communism)
  • Berlin Airlift-West allied plan to send supplies to western Berlin.
  • Marxism - the idea of removing class warfare in a community; a community with one.
  • Poor people do not revolt in America because they believe in the American Dream.

Important Dates:

1945-FDR dies, Truman President.
1946-Republictook control of both houses of Congress (House of Representatives + Senate).
1947-Truman orders loyalty check on all federal employees.
1948-Truman elected as president.
1950-McCarthy gets going, did not start McCarthyism, came before he went into office.

JFK

  • He was not loyal (to his wife).
  • He did choose peace with Cuba about the nuclear missiles.
  • Rocket to the moon.
  • Vietnam War (killed Southern leader of Vietnam to gain control of lower Vietnam).
  • Peace Core - People in their early mid-20s, send to areas where humatarian services are made.
